Potato-Peas Khurma



Potato - 4-5 medium - cut to medium sized pieces
Peas - 200 gms
Onion - 2 - finely chopped
Curry leaves - a sprig
Tomatoes - 3 medium - finely chopped/ or puree
Chillie powder - to taste
Coriander powder (dhania powder) - 1 tsp
Coconut grated - 100 gms
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Poppy Seeds (khuskhus) 2 tbsp
Green chilies - 3
Whole garam masala - dalchini 1/2" ( cinammon)
Clove- 1-2
Ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp
Oil - 2-3 tbsp




Soak poppy seeds for 1/2 hr in very little water ( a tbsp or two only)
Grind poppy seeds with green chillies and grated coconut to fine paste. ( this is important)
Heat oil
Add the garam masala.
Add the onion, ginger garlic paste, curry leaves
Saute till brown.
( optional - but for a better consistency, grind this to a fine paste - in this case omit adding the curry leaves)
Add the tomatoes, cook till soft.
Add the potatoes and peas
And the ground masala, turmeric powder, dhania powder, salt to taste and sufficient water.
Cover and allow to cook on slow fire.
Garnish and serve.

  1. I am liking liking liking this! Yum...okay...I'm back to my vegetarian youth. This looks absolutely wonderful...I can tell..can you?....when you read the spice list just what it will taste like.

    What is 'dalchini'? Dhania powder?

  2. Dalchini - is cinammon stick
    Dhania powder - coriander powder.
    Sorry, slipped up there - should have mentioned that in the ingredient list. Will edit the post now.

  3. you are demystifying things...great! Thanks....super! I love cinnamon...ask anyone. Next to that I guess cumin is my all time favorite!
