Dosakayya Pappu - Dal with Yellow Cucumber

A typically Andhra dish. Made with the round yellow cucumber variety.


2 small cucumbers ( dosakayya)
Tuvar Dal - 1/2 cup
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Red chillie powder - 1 tsp
Salt to taste.

For seasoning -
Oil
Mustard
Asafoetida ( hing)
Urad dal
Curry leaves
Dry red chillies


Cook the tuvar dal with turmeric till soft. Mash.
Peel the cucumber, remove seeds, cut into 1/4" pieces
Cook the cucumber ( just till slightly tender - or microwave for 2 mins instead)
Add the parboiled cucumber to the mashed dal.
Add salt, chillie powder, enough water to make a semi thick consistency.
Simmer awhile.
Remove from fire.
Season with oil, mustard, blackgram dal, hing, red chillies and curry leaves.

Eat with hot rice.

  1. Well...you have me hooked....grin. I am such a HUGE fan of Dahl...or do you spell it Dal...at any rate...I love it! Give me naan, dahl and raita and I am set for life
